A suspicious device found at Liberal’s Southwest Medical Center Friday afternoon led to the relocation of some staff and patients.

SWMC’s Keeley Moree said the device was found on the hospital’s northeast side outside the facility.

She added the Kansas Highway Patrol and local law enforcement, along with additional help, were inspecting the device.

“We are following standard safety protocols for this situation,” a post on SWMC’s Facebook page said Friday afternoon.

Moree assured people the hospital was not on lockdown and not at the point of evacuation, but rather a partial relocation.

The situation led to a closed road and restricted access to the affected area of the hospital, and Moree said Friday afternoon, hospital leaders were in the process of letting SWMC staff know about what was happening.

“We will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as more information becomes available,” the Facebook post noted.

Friday evening, SWMC reported on Facebook the scene had been cleared and released a statement regarding the situation.

“During the early afternoon hours of Friday, Dec. 15, a suspicious container was reported by an employee at Southwest Medical Center,” the statement began. “The container was located outdoors on the northeast side of the campus.

“Local law enforcement were quick to respond to the situation and call upon the assistance from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

“Following standard safety protocols, Southwest Medical Center had a partial relocation of staff and services in the immediate area.

“Upon arrival, Kansas Highway Patrol found the suspicious container did not contain harmful material, and the scene was cleared Friday evening.

“The team at Southwest Medical Center is thankful for the assistance of all law enforcement personnel involved in resolving the situation and maintaining the safety of patients and staff members.”
