When the Redskins came off the field last week after a 20-0 loss to Hays at Redskin Field, Liberal probably learned more form that than they did form the wins against Ulysses and Guymon.

The evidence that they learned was the 40-6 win over Wichita North Friday in Wichita.

Yes, Liberal should have won Friday night against a team that has struggled in recent years, but it was the way the Redskins won that indicated an ability to adjust.

Fewer penalties

Friday’s game was not squeaky clean, but it was a vast improvement over the first three games in terms of penalties.

Most specifically, personal fouls were nonexistent.

Liberal did get a late hit for hitting the quarterback late, but it was a close call and it wasn’t an unsportsmanlike play. It was simply to defenders going hard and the quarterback getting the benefit of protection.

Liberal had a couple of holding calls, but other than that, they did not cripple themselves the way they did against Hays by making critical mistakes at critical times.

The front five

First, the offensive line was shuffled up a bit, and even with a faulty snap here or there, the Redskin front five opened up holes.

Short passing game

For the most part, Liberal’s passing game so far has been 20-plus yards down the field.

Friday, the Redskins were able to implements a short passing game, getting the ball into the hands of playmakers like Jhett Brown and Tyrique Chandler.

When they had the ball after short five-yard style tosses, then they could work on defensive backs to gain another five to 10 yards.

And they did.

This is another example of being able to change, to adapt to the game and being willing to take what defenses are giving.

The short game has always been an option since most defenses do not want to give Brown and Chandler free runs down the field. That would be a quick and painful death.

The option, make the Redskins work the ball down the field in smaller chunks.

The end result — a slower but still painful death.

That is what happened to North Friday.

Attack from all sides

The Redskins are also involving a number of weapons.

Four running backs carried the load Friday night, and three more had touches in the backfield late in the game.

Syris Dunlap completed passes to four different receivers during the game including a two-point conversion.

In all, 11 different Redskins touched the ball.

National defense

North may not have been the toughest opponent Liberal will face, but they had talent.

Former Meade Buffalo coach Scott Moshier also had a creative playbook that he threw at Liberal Friday.

But the Redskin defense didn’t falter.

Liberal only allowed one scoring drive all night.

They forced two fumbles and had an interception.

The defensive side of the ball didn’t give up the sweep that Hays used to score against the Redskins a week ago.

It was clear that the Redskins learned form the mistakes against Hays, and the improvement now has Liberal fans believing that the Redskins can get another win Friday.
