The Lady Redskins found themselves trailing Dumas, Texas, 17-6 midway through the second quarter before the offense lit fire and Liberal rallied to a 39-28 win.
For the second straight game, Liberal standout Justice Norah did not score in the first quarter but ended with 18 points.
Kayla Varnes hit two free throws and Kirsten Ross added another, but that was all the scoring Liberal could find in the first quarter.
Dumas, on the other hand, had a hot hand in Lacy Foreman. The senior dished in six points in the opening period to help Dumas to a 10-3 lead.
Dumas stretched out to a 16-7 lead, before Liberal hit stride.
Malyssa Williams completed an old-fashioned three-point play, and after a defensive stop added another basket. Norah scored two straight buckets, and Kayla Payton ended the half with a three-pointer to give Liberal a 19-16 lead.
“We didn’t change much, it’s just defensively we were better,” Liberal coach Shane Stout said.
Liberal was able to execute a give and go to Norah in the second quarter that allowed the sophomore to score eight points.
“We ran that three or four times,” Stout said. “We got some offense, that got us going. Once we saw the ball in the hole one or two times, it loosened us up.”
The offensive scoring onslaught continued in the third quarter. Dumas hit an early basket but did not score for the next seven minutes.
Norah scored 10 points in the quarter, Payton added a three, Sherika Sanchez got a put-back basket, and Ross laid in a basket for a 36-21 Liberal lead.
Dumas tried to chip away at the lead in the fourth quarter, and even though the Lady Redskins only scored one field goal in the period, the Demonettes could not overcome the deficit. The Lady Redskins cruised to the 39-28 win.
“They scored 16 early, and only 28 in the game,” Stout said. “The last three quarters gave up 12 points. The second half was best effort of the year so far. I feel the girls are putting out a great effort right now.”
Liberal (3-1) will host Perryton Friday.
