The No.5 Southwestern Height Lady Mustangs (9-0) got the Hi-Plains League Tournament started off right with a 69-35 win over Lakin.
Rebi Jacobs got the Lady Mustangs offense rolling in the first quarter, hitting three 3-pointers in the first quarter. In total, Jacobs scored 11 of her 13 in the fist quarter to help Heights build a 20-9 first quarter lead.
“We had a strong outside shooting night from the start,” Lady Mustangs Coach Barry Mellen. “Defensively we did a great job of moving our feet and staying out of foul trouble for the most part. Some of our young players really stepped up with the foul trouble we did have and did a great job.”
In the second quarter Heights held Lakin to just 5 points, and built a 36-14 lead by halftime.
Chloe Coats (17 points) led the Lady Mustangs offensive assault in the third as the Heights outscored Lakin 24-15 to increase their lead to 31.
Sheree Ryan was steady throughout and finished the game with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Whitney Garinger led the Lady Mustangs with 5 of the teams 21 assists. As a team Heights also picked up 10 steals, and only had 9 turnovers.
“Overall we played pretty well,” Mellen said. “It was nice to see us take care of the ball and make good decisions. At times sluggish we need to put together all four quarters.”
Undefeated Heights advances to the semifinals where they will face Sublette (6-2), who defeated Elkhart Tuesday 57-54, Thursday at 6 p.m. at Garden City Community College.
