JOHN V. VALKENBURG
MONTEZUMA – John Van Valkenburg, 93, died Saturday, April 18, 2009, at his home in Montezuma.
He was born Aug. 21, 1915, to John A. and Daisy Bell (Dow) Van Valkenburg in Topeka.
He married Geneva L. Steen Sept. 3, 1939, in Marysville. She survives.
He served his country in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. He worked for many years as a truck driver and retired from Unruh Grain of Copeland.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Montezuma.
He was a past commander for the Montezuma America Legion Post No. 0203, a member of Ensign Masonic Lodge No. 413 and a former member of the Montezuma City Council.
He enjoyed gadget toys. He was a pilot and enjoyed airplanes and traveling.
Other survivors include five daughters, Gail Marvin and husband, Jim, Salina, Patricia Van Cleave, Minneapolis, Minn., Lou Ana Van Valkenburg, Lee’s Summit, Mo., Virginia Van Valkenburg, Overland Park, and Kathy Powell and husband, Joe, Amarillo, Texas; one brother, Marlin H. Van Valkenburg, Des Moines, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; one step grandson; 12 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Kenneth Van Valkenburg.
o Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Montezuma with the Rev. Jerry Odle presiding.
Military graveside services will be at Morningside Cemetery in Montezuma.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Montezuma Funeral Home.
