SPC Nathan Cole Olive, 24, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, in Manhattan.

He was born Oct. 14, 1984, to Haden Olive and Cynthia J. (Sassaman) in Dodge City.

He was a 2003 Liberal High School graduate. While in high school, he was active in football, track and wrestling.

He enlisted in the Army on Aug. 3, 2004, in Amarillo, Texas.

On Aug 1, 2006, he was deployed to Iraq until Nov. 1, 2007. He was awarded the Combat Infantrymen Badge and Army Commendation Medal. Upon his return, he served with 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. In July of 2008, he transferred to Fort Riley as Airborne Infantry.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Liberal.

He was a  lifetime member of the VFW Post No. 404 in Mohave Valley, Ariz.

He was also involved in UMYF (United Methodist Youth Fellowship) and the Explorers. 

He enjoyed staying active and spending time with his many friends.

Survivors include his father, Haden Olive, Liberal; his mother, Cindy Lovelace and husband, Robert, Turpin, Okla.; one brother, Travis Olive, LaCrosse; grandparents, Mert and Norma Sassaman, Mohave Valley, Ariz., and Richard Olive, Ford; one stepsister, Erin Lovelace, Wakeeney; and special friend, Ashley Hinnergardt, Manhattan.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Frieda Olive.

o Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church of Liberal with the Rev. David Randall presiding. 

Burial will follow at the Liberal Cemetary with military honors given by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday with the family present to receive friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home.
