Special to the Leader & Times
The Nguyens are returning to state for the second year in a row.
The doubles team of Duc and Vince Nguyen have qualified for the state competition in McPherson Friday.
Four years of quality play and an impressive body of work posting a record of 22-3 earned this team the No. 2 seed at the Regional Tennis Tournament in Salina May 6.
“Liberal could have easily sent five players to state, but heart-breaking tie breakers went the other way,” Liberal coach Bret Irby said.
Individual results:
Singles — Josh Hamilton lost a match much closer than the score indicated to conference rival and state qualifier Taylor Ermoian from Hays. The final score was 6-4, 6-4. Senior Hamilton completed a successful tennis career at Liberal with a game that should land him a spot at the collegiate level.
Singles — Joseph Cotto, a sophomore, played varsity singles for the first time this year and saw first-hand the level of play required to compete at the regional and state tournaments. He lost to Lucas Windfuhr form Newton 6-0 and 6-0.
Doubles — Vince and Duc Nguyen earned the No. 2 seed at the regional tournament and received a bye in the first round.
They defeated conference rivals Moyers and Jacob from Great Bend, 6-1, 6-2 to qualify for state.
The Nguyens dropped the next two matches after securing their ticket to state.
Doubles — Tony Rodriguez and Ozzy Villareal almost stunned the state with an upset bid over Salina South’s team but dropped the tie breaker 10-8.
