Liberal’s Cinco de Mayo celebration is less than a month away. With time running short, the Cinco de Mayo Committee would like to remind the community of several things that require community participation.
The Cinco de Mayo Parade will start at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 1. It will begin at Light Park and proceed down Kansas Avenue to the Rock Island Depot.
Participants will need to begin lining up at 12:30 p.m. at Light Park. All parade entries are free. Parade forms may be mailed to Cinco de Mayo Committee, P.O. Box 1112, Liberal KS 67905. Call 624-3855 for more information.
Parade Chairperson Julio Jiminez said prizes will be awarded for the three floats that best catch the eye of the judges.
Prizes for the float competition will be $200 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place. Prizes will be awarded to the top three floats at the Seward County Activity Center following the parade.
Jiminez would like to remind participants of a rule that must be followed if entering a float or vehicle in the Cinco de Mayo Parade.
“Participants may hand out candy or other novelties, but cannot throw items from the float or vehicle into the crowd,” he noted.
Sponsorships are still available for the Cinco de Mayo Celebration. The Cinco de Mayo Committee wishes for the community to remember as a non-profit organization, their primary goal is to raise scholarship funds for local students wishing to further their education.
Sponsorship levels are as follows:
o Gold ($500 or more) – There are only six spots available. The sponsor will get a half-page ad in the April 24 tab in the Leader & Times, a large special package of radio advertising on La Mexicana Radio Station and a prominent spot for a banner;
