Lyric Robinson scored eight points to lead the West Lady Warrior
eighth graders to a 16-13 win over Kepley Tuesday at Warrior Stadium.
While the offense did enough to win, it was the defense that put the
clamps on the Lady Cubs.
West (3-0) forced turnovers and limited Kepley to one shot when the
Lady Cubs were able to get a shot.
“We are living off our defense,” West coach Pat Knott said. “No one
believes in it, but our girls do.”
West scrambled for loose balls and tied up the Lady Cubs throughout
the game, forcing jump balls.
But the Kepley defense was strong as well, and it slowed down the
Lady Warrior offense.
“Kepley plays good defense,” Knott said. “We couldn’t get into our
running game. We have to give them credit.”
Riley Hay continued to run the West offense on the court and was able
to get the ball to the right Lady Warrior.
“She’s a scrapper,” Knott said. “She runs the show out there, and
this team won’t quit.”
The post players also impressed Knott.
“They are starting to play well,” he said. “They did a good job.”
The Lady Warriors extended their one-point halftime lead to 12-9, but
Kepley scored the next four points to take a 13-12 lead.
Jaycee Darroch connected with a jumper to put the Lady Warriors up
14-13, and Shelby Hay added the only basket of the fourth quarter for
the 16-13 Lady Warrior win.
