Leader & Times staff report
When the Seward County Lady Saints walked onto the court Saturday night in The Greenhouse, there were only seven players in uniform. That’s two above the minimum required. That also means any sort of foul trouble would be disastrous for Seward.
The ladies averted disaster, and gutted out a 63-55 win over the Lady Beavers.
The win gives Seward County a 3-1 record in the Jayhawk West heading into tonight’s trip to Concordia to face first place Cloud County.
Pratt (10-7 overall, 0-3 in the Jayhawk West) used a full court press to wear down the Lady Saints. And it worked for most of the first half as the Lady Beavers held the lead for all but the final 50 seconds of the first half.
Seward County turned the ball over seven times in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Down four, four consecutive free throws by Mariah Lee cut it to 22-20 before Hanna Bognar tied it. Morgan Skomal grabbed a steal and dished to Kayla Thomas to give the Lady Saints (13-5, 3-1) its first lead, 24-22, with 50 seconds left in the half.
Cari Guyton tied it back for Pratt in the closing seconds.
Seward gathered its breath for a second half run and quickly grabbed the lead, never relinquishing it for the rest of the game.
Lee led SCCC with 20 points and 7 boards, Bognar and Mattie Yanke each scored 10, Ashlynn Knoll had 9 points and 7 rebounds, Thomas 8 points, Kelsey Willson 4 and Skomal 4.
