TYRONE, Okla. — To say the Hooker Bulldogs dominated the Tyrone Lady Bobcats Tuesday night would be an understatement. Hooker’s defense was smothering, and it had the Lady Cats in shock in a 49-10 loss.
“I thought we played really good defense,” said Hooker head coach Ray Kennedy. “I felt like we played really hard, really intense. I’m really proud of the way we played.”
That intensity on defense allowed the Lady Bulldogs (5-4) to score at will. Hooker led 15-4 at the end of the first and 23-6 at the half.
But Tyrone (4-4) has some great shooters, which had Kennedy worried, even up 23-6 at halftime.
“I wasn’t comfortable until we got into the second half,” Kennedy said. “We came out and we played well in the second half and we got to get everybody in.”
The outside game was clicking for Hooker, which opened up the inside game with Jade Cathcart — who scored all eight Hooker points in the second — and Shayla Mathis. Mathis opened the game with two straight baskets, and the Lady Dogs kicked outside to the hot-shooting Jayme Walton.
Tyrone, meanwhile, could never get its offense in gear because of Hooker’s press, and managed two free throws and a field goal by Trista Jaramillo in the first and just a Shayla Cornelson basket in the second as Hooker led 23-6 at the half.
Hooker led 34-10 after the third and shut the Bobcats out in the fourth, ending the game on a 15-0 run.
Walton led the Lady Bulldogs with 16 points — including three 3-pointers — Cathcart 10 and Mathis eight.
Cornelson led the Lady Bobcats with six and Jaramillo added four.
