As part of an effort to better engage residents, Seward County officials are considering streaming commission meetings live on social media, namely through Facebook.

Commissioners are scheduled to hear from Seward County Administrator April Warden at tonight’s regular meeting regarding streaming the meetings.

Information in the agenda packet for tonight’s meeting said part of the commission’s goals and long-term strategy is how to reach and engage the county’s constituents.

“While the commissioners still depend on the newspaper, radio and traditional media outlets, they are trying to take citizen engagement one step further by considering Facebook Live,” the information said.

Depending on the options chosen, the cost should not exceed $1,500. The agenda information likewise said along with taking citizen engagement a step further, Facebook Live also allows county officials to connect directly with people via live comments.

“It is part of the strategy to reach more people where they are and how they can be reached,” the information said.

Staff recommendation is to approve streaming commission meetings on Facebook Live as part of the county’s long-term strategy to increase engagement with residents.

The costs of the project, which again should not exceed $1,500, would be paid for through county’s technology budget.

Tonight’s meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:30 in the commission chambers in the Seward County Administration Building.
