The Santa Fe Trail Council: Boy Scouts of America of Southwest Kansas will be celebrating the 100th Anniversary of scouting on Oct. 9 at the Finney County Fairgrounds and Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City.
The celebration will be an all-day-Saturday event with many activities for scouts, leaders and their families.
Events include soapbox derby racing, electrical safety demonstrations by Wheatland Electric, exhibits by the Garden City SWAT and K-9 units, BB gun and archery shooting, mountain man games and activities at the Lee Richardson Zoo. Boy Scouts will be working on the Crime Prevention and Law Merit Badges during the day.
Scouts, families and leaders will be camping out at the Finney County Park on Friday and Saturday evening.
A 100th Anniversary picture of all current and past Boy Scouts and leaders will be taken at 6 p.m. in front of the Finney County Courthouse in Garden City. A Statue of Liberty was erected in 1950 in front of the courthouse commemorating the 40 Anniversary of Scouting.
“Anyone who was ever involved in Scouting is invited to be in the picture,” John Hogg, Executive Director of the Santa Fe Trail Council said.
The event also includes a special 100th anniversary dinner at the 3-I Building at the Finney County Fairgrounds. A special gathering of area Eagle Scouts will be part of the program. Anyone who has attained the rank of Eagle Scout is encouraged to attend the dinner and receive a special recognition.
Entertainment includes a national comedy act called “Flying Debris.” They have performed in Las Vegas and through out the United States. A huge 100th Anniversary birthday cake will be part of the celebration.
