A one-vehicle crash very early today in Meade County ends up killing one woman and sending six others to the hospital, two in serious enough condition to be transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
According to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol, 25-year-old Eligio G. Juarez of Riverside, Calif., was driving a 2000 Chevrolet utility vehicle eastbound on U.S. Highway 54 7.4 miles east of Meade when he fell asleep at 12:30 a.m. The report noted the vehicle “drifted into oncoming traffic and eventually off the roadway impacting the north side bridge guardrail causing the vehicle to rotate and roll over multiple times.”
The vehicle then came to rest at the bottom of a ravine facing the southwest.
Killed in the incident was 55-year-old passenger Juana Alonso Morales-Real of San Bernardino, Calif. Two of the other passengers, a 6-year-old girl and 27-year-old Maria Jimenes-Juarez were both taken to Minneola District Hospital and later transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Others injured and taken to hospitals included two young girls, a 7-month-old and a 6-year-old. A 57-year-old man, Ramon Alvarado, was also hospitalized at Minneola District Hospital. The others were taken to Meade District Hospital, and all were listed as California residents.
The report noted the baby girl was in a car seat but it was not properly restrained.
