Ashley Eakes, Braden Steckel share honors as co-salutatorians

Southwestern Heights High School has announced the valedictorian and co-salutatorians of the graduating class of 2010.
Principal Dan Frisby announced Friday that Kathy Eakes, daughter of Ron and Kim Eakes, has been named as valedictorian for the graduating class of 2010.
Ashley Eakes, daughter of Larry and Debbie Eakes, and Braden Steckel, son of John and Stacey Steckel, were announced as co-salutatorians. These selections are based on the students’ cumulative grade point averages throughout high school.
Kathy Eakes has been involved in National Honor Society, where she served as vice-president her senior year; KAYS, where she has served as points director and service director; drama, Mustang Singers, band, choir, FCCLA and student council, where she served as president. She has been listed on the A Honor Roll all four years of high school. Kathy has been a member of the volleyball, basketball and softball teams all 4 years of high school. She was chosen a Kansas Honors Scholar by the University of Kansas her senior year and is a Kansas State Board of Regents Curriculum Completer. She was accepted to Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina as a music education major.
Ashley Eakes’s accomplishments include being involved in National Honor Society, where she served as president her senior year, Web page design editor, Junior and Senior Class President, FCCLA, student council vice-president and KAYS, where she also serves as student council rep. She has also been listed on the A Honor Roll all four years of high school. Ashley has also been a member of the volleyball and softball teams all four years of high school. She was named a Kansas Honors Scholar by the University of Kansas and is a Kansas State Board of Regents Curriculum Completer. Ashley desires to pursue a degree in medicine at Texas Christian University.
Braden Steckel has been a member of National Honor Society, Mustang Singers, choir, drama, and the woodworking classes. Braden was selected a Kansas Honors Scholar by the University of Kansas and plans to attend Garden City Community College and study fire science.
Southwestern Heights congratulates these students for their achievements and wishes them well in their future endeavors. Graduation will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 16, at Southwestern Heights High School gymnasium.
