The Guymon Lady Tigers will be playing in the Oklahoma playoffs for the first time in school history, and with a key game coming up Friday, Guymon opted to leave their varsity at home and sent the junior varsity to play back-to-back games against Liberal’s junior varsity and varsity squads. The results was a 3-0 JV win for the Lady Redskins and a 10-0 mercy rule victory less than halfway through the second half.

“If you have a team on the schedule you have to respect that game,” Liberal coach Luis Aguilar said. “I would have preferred that they played with their varsity.”

The last time Liberal and Guymon played, Liberal won in a shootout after a 0-0 tie in regulation.

Liberal scored early and often in the mercy rule event. Crystal Tiscareno scored Liberal’s first three goals in 13 minutes, and Jacqueline Herrera matched it with three goals of her own to give the Lady Redskins a 6-0 lead at half.

Tiscareno needed one minute to score Liberal’s first second-half goal, and Hererra added her fourth goal of the day three minutes later.

The Lady Redskins made massive substitutions and moved players into different positions most of the second half. Nohemi Ramirez scored the ninth Lady Redskin goal, and the game ended when Ramirez received a crossing pass and  knocked it into the goal for the 10-0 win with 25:40 remaining to play.

“This was something we needed, something that will boost our morale,” Aguilar said. “We’ve been going through some changes.”

Some of those changes including a coaching change that places Aguilar and Stacie King as co-head coaches for the rest of the season.

Getting a big win at home prior to the North Cup tournament in Wichita may give the Lady Redskins the confidence they need to make some noise the remainder of the season.

“When we go down one goal, the game is over for them,” Aguilar said. “That’s been hard for me to change. Here at home, they play hard to keep the score 0-0 and try to get the first goal.”

Liberal will travel to Wichita Monday to face Wichita West in the first round of the North Cup tournament.
