JV gets split

Daily Leader staff report

Liberal’s offense continued to struggle Thursday in a  double header loss at Hays.

Liberal dropped the pair 10-0 and 16-1.

Emily Jackson pitched for the Lady Redskins in Game 1 and kept the damage to a minimum early.

Jackson and the Lady Redskin defense held Hays to five runs after five innings but could not score a run of their own.

Hays had a big sixth inning, scoring five runs for the 10-0 win.

The Lady Redskins were held to only two hits.

In Game 2, Emily Bayouth started he Lady Redskins off in the bottom of the first with a two-out hit and was able to advance to second on a passed ball. Jackson ripped a triple to right field that scored Bayouth, and the Lady Redskins had a 1-0 lead.

Jackson preserved the lead on the mound by retiring the first three Hay batters.

But Liberal’s offense could not string together enough hits the rest of the way.

Hays, however, came alive at the plate and took advantage of Lady Redskin errors to score seven runs in the second and eight more in the third. A lone Lady Indian run in the fourth led to the 16-1 run-rule win.

“We showed some heart early,” Liberal coach Pat Knott said. “We need to build off that one inning and put seven innings together like the first one.”

The junior varsity was able to chalk up a Western Athletic COnference victory with an 11-9 win in Game 1 before dropping Game 2, 9-8.

Jaycee Darroch pitched for the Lady Redskins in the win. She also chipped in a two-for-three effort at the plate including a double. Micah Hasik contributed at the plate by going three-for-four with 3 RBI.

Liberal will face Wichita Southeast April 23 in Wichita.
