Enjoy the movie “Bolt” at 2 p.m. Saturday and help out the local United Way. The management at Sunflower Theater Southgate 4 has designated that showing of the delightful animated comedy as a United Way fund-raiser. Admission is a free-will cash donation with all proceeds going to the Seward County United Way.
“We really appreciate Earl Watt and the Sunflower Theater staff coming up with a creative way to help raise funds for the United Way,” said Kay Burtzloff, executive director of the Seward County United Way. “They’ve selected a fun movie suitable for the whole family.”
Bolt, voiced by John Travolta, is a small white dog that has lived all his life on the set of a TV show in which he portrays a superhero dog. As a result, he thinks that his superpowers, and events on film, are real. When he is accidentally shipped from his Hollywood soundstage to New York City, he embarks on a cross-country journey to reunite with his owner and co-star, Penny, voiced by Miley Cyrus.
Along the way, Bolt teams up with a jaded alleycat named Mittens and a TV-obsessed hamster named Rhino, who also happens to be an extreme Bolt fan. “Bolt eventually finds out that his superpowers aren’t real, but he soon discovers that he doesn’t need superpowers to be a hero.
Burtzloff said last year’s “Matinee for United Way” raised $779 for the campaign with the showing of “Alvin and the Chipmunks.”
“We had a great response last year so I’m hoping for a big audience this year,” she said. “We hope people understand that there is no set price of admission. It is just whatever cash they want to give to their local United Way.”
The 2009 goal is $305,000, the highest one ever set by the Seward County United Way Board of Directors. The funds will be used to support 25 local agencies. For more information about the movie or the Untied Way, contact Burtzloff at 624-5400 or
