After an emotional home loss to No. 3 Hutchinson in the Greenhouse Saturday, the Lady Saints had to go on the road to Barton County in an attempt to rebound.
After building a 20-point lead in the second half, No. 10 Seward held on down the stretch for a 79-72 win to stay within a game of Hutchinson at the top of the Jayhawk West Conference.
Five Lady Saints scored in double digits in the win.
Neither team was able to get any distance in the first 15 minutes, but the Lady Saints surged before halftime to take a 39-27 lead.
The Lady Saints were able to get to the free throw line for 37 attempts, something they were not able to do against Hutchinson. Seward only had 13 attempts against the Lady Blue Dragons.
By neutralizing the advantage at the line, the Lady Saints were able to build a 58-38 lead with 11:50 to play after a pair of free throws from Fabiana Monte.
Seward maintained a double digit lead until Brandy Winbush hit a three-pointer for Barton to cut the Lady Saints’ lead to 66-59.
Two Ashton Bruner free throws later, Barton had trimmed Seward leads down to five, 66-51, with 3:39 to play.
Seward made eight of 14 free throws in the final three minutes and Janel Tammen hit a three-pointer with a minute to play to secure the 78-72 win.
Shanise Brooks led Seward with 17 points, Alana Simon scored 14, Monte added 12, Rebekah Hatchard came off the bench to score 11, and Korina Chapman added 10.
Seward (18-2, 3-1) will return to the Greenhouse for homecoming at 6 p.m. Saturday when they host Dodge City (14-6, 1-3)
