A former South Middle School teacher and athletic coach has been arrested and charged with three counts of indecent liberties with a child.
Jason Scott Brown, 26, allegedly had two incidents where there was “lewd and fondling or touching of a child” less than 14 years old in October and November of 2009, and then authorities allege another incident in December with the same child, who had turned 14 by that time.
Those charges came following his resignation, which was turned in on Jan. 14, according to records from USD No. 480. The district accepted Brown’s resignation on Jan. 18.
Seward County attorney Don Scott said Brown had his first appearance on Jan. 21.
At a scheduling on Jan. 25, the educator asked for more time, but Scott said Brown had apparently hired a lawyer when he appeared for a scheduling hearing on Monday.
“Clint Floyd appeared with him, and a preliminary hearing is set for the 24th of February,” Scott said.
Brown currently remains in the Seward County jail. His bond was originally set at $150,000, but Scott said there has been a motion made for a bond reduction.
“There’s a notice of hearing on the bond reduction for Feb. 8 at 1:15 p.m.,” he said. “They want to reduce it to $50,000.”
Brown taught seventh and eighth grade math at South and worked as a boys and girls assistant basketball coach and football coach.
