After the excitement of the last city commission meeting with the concealed carry ordinance, this week’s meeting should be down to more run-of-the-mill business.

The first main item on the agenda will be the first reading of Ordinance No. 4412. This ordinance will discuss the rezoning of platted land.

Currently, there are many lots and blocks of land near Cortez Street that are considered “R-2” districts. “R-2” and “R-3” are classifications that determine what type of dwellings will be built on that land. “R-2” means two-family dwelling district, and “R-3” means multiple family dwelling district.

The ordinance was created to change these “R-2” districts to “R-3” districts.

The rezoning of the lots and blocks is hoped to “help alleviate the rental property shortages in the City of Liberal,” as Zoning Administrator Kory Krause stated in his letter to the commission.

As far as action on this item, the city staff and planning commission recommend that the commission bring back the ordinance for a second reading.

The next item on the agenda is new funding for robotics. James Bert, the director at the Mid-America Air Museum, wrote a letter to the commission. In it, he asked permission to “expend $5,860 to purchase robotics equipment to support the robotics workshops and competition year.”

The money will come from a grant given to the robotics class by a local foundation.

The city commission meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the City Commission Chambers, 325 N. Washington.
