The first game of the soccer season provided all the drama of a late run for a playoff berth, and it took a standout performance from a freshman to lift the Lady Redskins to a 2-1 overtime victory over Guymon.
Neither team scored in the first half, but a yellow card with 22:26 left in the game allowed Guymon to get a direct kick, and Lady Tiger Denise Longoria was able to get the ball between the hands of goalie Magali Vasquez on a shot high and to the right to give Guymon a 1-0 lead.
The Lady redskins continued to take shots but could not penetrate the Guymon defense until 7:09 to play.
That’s when freshman Jasmine Chacon was able to get the ball past Guymon goalie Cathrine Elkin to tie the game, 1-1.
Neither team was able to score in the final seven minutes, and the game went to overtime.
Liberal was abel to get a scoring opportunity with 4:02 left in overtime when Chacon received a pass from Crystal Vela and sent the shot toward the Guymon goal. Elkin could not stop the ball, and the Lady Redskins were abel to earn a 2-1 overtime win in the first game of the season.
The Lady Redskins took 16 shots in the game, and Vazquez recorded two saves.
Liberal will travel to Wichita Monday to compete in the Titan Classic. The Lady Redskins (1-0) will face Wichita South at 4 p.m.
