• Seward County United Way
The Liberal Area Coalition for Families (LACF), in partnership with Southwest Guidance Center (SWGC) has been awarded a grant from United Methodist Ministry Health Fund. The grant amount totaled $116,000 for Jan. 1, 2013 through Dec. 31, 2014. The focus of this grant is on the social and emotional health of children birth to age five.
The Health Fund’s focus on early childhood mental health aims at four improvements in Kansas:
• Expanding consistent screening for pregnant women, new mothers, and young children
• Improving accessibility to early interventions
• Enhancing professional readiness for work with young children
• Increasing awareness of the importance of early prevention and intervention
The grant for LACF, entitled “Bright Futures Begin at Home,” covers the catchment area for SWGC, which includes Haskell, Meade, Stevens and Seward counties. The services provided through the grant funding will include increased early childhood developmental screening, expanded post partum care for new mothers, early childhood parenting classes and supports as well as an early childhood mental health therapist at Southwest Guidance Center. The therapist will begin seeing clients at the Southwest Guidance Center in March. Throughout the life of the grant, a large emphasis will be placed on professional and community education on the importance of social and emotional health in young children.
Beginning Monday, LACF also sponsor a Triple P Level 2 community seminar series. These seminars are designed for delivery to large groups of parents and include three 90 minute sessions. The seminar series includes specific seminars on the following topics The Power of Positive Parenting; Raising Confident, Competent Children; Raising Resilient Children. Each seminar includes a presentation, and a question and answer session.
Two sessions will be offered each night of the seminar series. The first will start at 4:15 p.m. and conclude at 5:45 p.m. This first session will focus on young/teens moms. The second class will start at 6 p.m. and complete at 7:30 p.m. for any parent in the community with a child age birth to 5. At each session, dinner will be provided along with free childcare. If a parent attends all three sessions, they will be given a $20 gift card to Wal-Mart for completing the seminar series. The classes will be conducted at Friends Church, 1650 N. Western Ave. To register or for more information, contact Sarah Foreman at 655-7177 or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
