The search to find the area’s top country crooner is on once again as the Liberal High School Booster Club has opened entries for Liberal’s fifth Country Showdown competition.
Contestants in the showdown competition must fill out an entry form, submit a CD with one recorded track and turn it in with a $10 dollar entry fee to the 102.7 The Legend studios before 4:30 p.m. on March 8.
Scheduled for March 29, the Country Showdown competition will feature 25 contestants in an “American Idol” style competition with more than $2,500 dollars in cash and prizes up for grabs. After a preliminary round, the top 10 vocalists chosen by both judges and audience votes will be brought back for a second round of songs before the top three winners are chosen. Every $5 dollar admission ticket for audience members will buy a vote in each round and audience members can buy as many tickets as they wish to support their favorite singer. Audience votes make up for half of a participant’s score.
In the event that more than 25 contestants enter the Country Showdown, co-organizer and KSCB/The Legend radio host Joe Denoyer explained that a panel of judges will meet to listen to entries and decide on the top 25 without ever seeing the name of the contestants.
Individual performers are encouraged to lend their voice to this fundraising event for a chance to win cash, prizes and the top three vocalists will have the opportunity to open for the Casey Donahew Band, who will play a concert the next night. The first place winner will receive $1,000 dollars cash.
Denoyer said he expects the fundraiser to be a big success.
“On Saturday, March 30th, I have booked the Casey Donahew Band for an hour and a half show, which I anticipate will sell out the 1,000 seats quickly,” Denoyer explained. “In the past three years, this fundraising weekend has raised over $36,000 for the Booster Club of Liberal High School.”
While tickets for the competition night will be available at the door, those interested in seeing the Casey Donahew Band performance are encouraged to get their tickets before they’re sold out. Tickets will be $15 dollars and sales open at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the studios of 102.7 The Legend. There is no limit on the number of tickets a person can purchase.
Proceeds from the Country Showdown weekend will allow the LHS Booster Club to purchase various equipment needs for LHS sports departments.
For more information about the Country Showdown competition and Casey Donahew Concert, contact 102.7 The Legend at (620) 624-3891 or stop by the studios at 1410 N. Western Ave.
