TURPIN, Okla., - The Elkhart Lady Wildcats got off to a fast start and the Turpin Lady Cardinals lacked the depth and scoring to catch them. Elkhart steadily built on the lead and defeated Turpin 65-35.

“Two words for us, depth and experience,” Lady Cardinals coach Jeff Funk said. “We were down ten in the third quarter, and we got tired. Our top two girls off the bench were ineligible. I loved our effort. It’s been there all season.”

The Lady Wildcats led 21-9 at the end of the first, and scored the first five of the second to go up 15 points just seven minutes left in the half.

Turpin played their best ball of the game during that stretch by penetrating and getting to the free throw line. Raegan Alvarez and Ashli Funk each converted three-point plays, but Turpin still trailed 35-21 at the half.

Turpin cut the lead to 10 (37-27) with 6:24 left in the third, but it was all downhill from that point on. Elkhart finished the quarter on a 16-2 run to make the score 52-29 heading into the fourth.

Elkhart outscored Turpin 13-6 in the fourth to win by 30.

“I’m proud of our seniors,” Funk said. “We had two come out just this year, and three who have been here all four years. I thank all of them for their effort.”

Raegan Alvarez led the Lady Cardinals in scoring with 15 points; Alyssa Kinser and Ashli Funk each finished with 8.

Turpin (3-19) will take on Beaver (10-13) Friday at Texhoma in the first round of the district playoffs.
