The third quarter proved to be the pivotal point in the game, as the Forgan Lady Bulldogs held on in the fourth to defeat the Southwestern Heights Lady Mustangs, 39-36.
Trailing 19-14 at the half, Forgan battled back to take a 20-19 lead with 5:34 left. Forganoutscored Heights 15-5 in the third to switch from down five to up five (29-24) in one quarter.
The Lady Mustangs came back in the fourth, outscoring Forgan 13-10, but came up three short. Heights’ Nayelly LaPoint scored seven of her 11 points in the fourth. KaDawn McReynolds countered for Forgan with five of her seven points.
Heights had started the game well, scoring the game's first eight points to take a 16-10 lead. Ivon Amparon scored all six of her points in the quarter to help build the Lady Mustangs lead. Kenzi Taylor kept the Lady Bulldogs within striking distance with six in the quarter.
Both defenses stepped up in the second with a combined total of seven points scored in the quarter.
Forgan’s Kenzi Taylor scored a game-high 14 points. Kenzi was 3 of 8 from the field, but made 8 of 12 free throws. Nikki Taylor was 6 of 10 from the field for 13 points.
Raquel Longoria led the Lady Mustangs with 12 points, all from three-point range (4 of 7).
Forgan (14-6) will travel to Turpin (3-17) Friday and Beaver (8-12) Saturday.
