Seward used a strong outside game in the first half and then pounded the ball inside in the second to knock off Dodge City 73-57 Saturday in the Green House.
Seward made six three-pointers in the first half to help build a 46-32 lead. Seward was only one of 12 from beyond the arc in the second half, but made enough shots in the paint to build an 18-point lead before winning by 16.
The win was the 200th for coach Toby Wynn at Seward County.
“I thought we played well tonight,” he said. “We have not played well offensively in recent games. We were more efficient. The second half got a little sloppy, but we have good kids, they are trying hard, practicing hard. I thought we played pretty well.”
Dodge abandoned an inside game and pulled the ball out in a near-stall approach, and that forced Wynn to play a different line-up.
“For us it was a tough match-up,” he said. “We try to play with two post players, but we couldn’t guard them on the perimeter. We had to run an offense we hadn’t practiced in over a month. I was proud of our kids to make that adjustment.”
The 16-point win could have been more, but the Lady Saints allowed some easy shots miss their mark in th second half.
“We play with people however they are,” Wynn said. “We don’t dominate anybody, we just play to the level of our opponents every game.”
Shanise Brooks led the Lady Saints with 23 points. Madison McLain scored 19, and Kelsey Blair added 11.
Seward (13-5, 4-1) will travel to No. 10 Garden City (18-2, 4-2) for a 5:30 p.m. tip Wednesday.
