Bryan Zollinger might have actually enjoyed his 150th win as the head coach of Seward County.
The hard-nosed Zollinger demands high energy and focus at all times, and for the first half against Dodge City, his team’s defense was devastatingly stingy.
Dodge City only scored 10 points in the first half. Seward did not allow a three pointer in 10 attempts, and the Conquistadors only made five of 29 attempts.
Seward jumped out to a 30-10 lead by halftime, and the second half was little more than going through the motions as the Saints maintained the 20-point advantage in the 62-42 win.
“We played extremely hard on defense in the first half,” Zollinger said. “We moved the ball really well for most of the first half. I was disappointed in our effort and execution in the second half. Fourteen turnovers are unacceptable. It’s hard to maintain your focus with a big lead like that. We have to finish like we started.”
Still, the 10-point first half was something that reminded Zollinger of his third-place national tournament team from a year ago.
“We held Garden City to 11 last year in one of the best defensive efforts I’ve seen,” he said. “This half was similar to that.”
But the second half didn’t impress Zollinger on the offensive side.
“I didn’t think we played offense worth a hoot in the second half,” he said. “We did enough to hold our lead. They played us even in the second half.”
Jabari Peters led the Saints with 13 points, Malcolm Hill-Bey had 12, Kaheem Ransom scored 11, and Edson Avila had 10.
Seward (13-6, 4-1) will travel to Garden City (10-10, 2-4) for a 7:30 p.m. start Wednesday.
