Liberal’s Katie Horyna continued her strong start to the season Saturday, and Machia Mullens had her strongest night of offense as well in a 60-23 win over the Borger Lady Bulldogs.

Horyna continued to streak to the basket, and she added a three-point shot as well to score 17 points in the win, and Mullens dominated the paint to add 10 points from the field and a perfect five-for-five form the free throw line for 15 points.

While the two sophomores were having a strong night, senior Ali Lucero also reached double digits, chipping in 11 points.

Freshman Reece Hay added eight points including two threes.

The Lady Redskins jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the first quarter led by six points from Horyna, and by halftime the Lady Redskins built a 31-13 lead.

Liberal continued to dominate in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 17-10 for a 48-23 lead.

Liberal coach Carter Kruger made a number of substitutions in the fourth, but the Lady redskins defense continued to frustrate Borger, and the Lady Bulldogs failed to score in the final period while the Lady Redskins added 12 more for the 60-23 win.

“Our defense set the tone,” Kruger said. “We pressed right away, and that led to some easy baskets.”

Horyna and Mullens combined for 32 points in the win.

“They will lead the way in scoring, but they do more,” Kruger said. “They defend and play wiser beyond their years.”

Even with the halftime lead. Kruger challenged his team.

“I asked the girls if we wanted to be good or wanted to be great,” he said. “Great teams play all the time like their hair is on fire. They try to treat every possession like it might be their last. When you are building a culture, it is just how they are. We are trying to build that.”

Kruger has the Lady Redskins off to a 4-0 start, but that is only the beginning of what he wants this team to accomplish.

“I’m pleasantly surprised with the defensive game plan and executing that,” he said. “Offensively we are scratching the surface of what we can be.”

Liberal will complete the 2017 portion of the season at Perryton Friday.
