BEAVER, Okla. — Four seniors led the way on Senior Night as they have all season for the Lady Dusters. Erin Becker, Anna McDonald, Catie Rife and Jordan Jesko combined to score 50 of Beaver’s 59 points in a 59-38 win over the Laverne Lady Tigers.
“That group of kids has played together forever, and it looked like it at times tonight,” said Lady Dusters coach Casey Jones. “They kind of know where each other is going to be. Some of that just comes from playing together since grade school.”
Like they have done most of the season, the Lady Dusters jumped out to an early lead. But this time it wasn’t so much their full-court press as it was their sharp shooting. Three different players hit threes in the first, and Beaver made 7 of 11 shots from the field in the quarter.
The Lady Dusters put their offense in overdrive in the second quarter, outscoring Laverne 21-6. Beaver shot even better than in the first quarter, making 9 of 11 field goals to take a dominating 38-15 lead to the locker room.
“Like every night, you like to have a nice quick start,” said Jones “(We) got ourselves out to a lead, and press-wise we weren’t getting a lot of steals, but we were making them worry, and making them work hard for a shot. They missed a few and we were able to run the floor and get some easy buckets on them in transition.”
Foul trouble caused Rife to miss important minutes in the second and third quarters. And even though it had no bearing on the outcome tonight, foul trouble is a concern with the lack of game-time experience on the Lady Dusters bench.
“It’s definitely a concern,” said Jones. “Catie gets some fouls on the offensive end she doesn’t need to get. She’s going to guard the biggest girl on the other team so she’s going to get some fouls. She just has to avoid the bad ones.”
Beaver continued to control, ending the third with a 7-0 run that pushed the lead to 28 at, 50-22. Mostly reserves played in the fourth.
The Lady Dusters finished the night 18 of 34 from 2-point range, 5 of 10 from beyond the arc, and 8 of 14 from the line. Defensively, Beaver held the Lady Tigers to just 28 percent from the field.
Erin Becker led all scorers with 23 on 9-of-14 shooting, Anna McDonald added 13 making 5 of 10 shots, and Catie Rife scored 9.
The Lady Dusters improve their record to 20-2, and will face one of their toughest opponents in the final regular season matchup when they travel to take on Southwestern Heights (11-2) next Tuesday.
