HUGOTON — After falling behind early, the Southwestern Heights Mustangs fought back in the second half, but came up just short in a 57-56 loss to the Perryton Rangers Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the Red and Blue Classic in Hugoton.

The two teams battled back and fourth throughout the opening quarter, but Perryton was able to pull ahead by five to close out the first, and led 22-17.

The Rangers continued to control the pace in the second quarter, and extended their lead in the process. Heading to the half, Perryton had a 35-27 edge.

To begin the third quarter, it looked as though the Rangers would run away with the game, opening up a double-digit lead. Heights began to attack, and closed the deficit to just one by the end of the third, trailing 46-45.

The final quarter saw both teams going back-and-fourth, with the Mustangs up by one in the final minute.

After a Perryton bucket with under 30 seconds remaining, and trailing by one, Heights had one last shot at taking the game. However, a pass down the court went stray, and the Rangers had escaped with the one point win, 57-56.

The Mustangs will take on the Hooker Bulldogs at 4:45 p.m. today in second round action.
