ULYSSES – Mary Ella Ward, 85, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.

She was born Oct. 18, 1928, to John and Merril (Gierhart) Battin in Manter.

She married Virgil L. Ward Jan. 1, 1948, in Manter. He died in 2003.

She graduated from high school in Oberlin.  She obtained her bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University.

She was a homemaker and mother to her four children.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a 4-H leader, member of a book club, Junior Civic organization, and helped with the Home Products Dinner.

She is survived by her three sons, Robert D. Ward and wife, Cindy, Angleton, Texas, Dr. John R. Ward and wife, Mary LeNnis, Hugoton,  and Dr. Larry G. Ward and wife, Jana, Wichita; one daughter, Nancy Davis and husband, Jeff,  Garden City; one sister, Donna Bird, Liberal; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Keith and Dwayne Battin.

• Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses,  with Peggy Alford, Pat Traster and Alice Frey presiding.

Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
