HOOKER, OKLA. — Quietly, Hooker’s girls have become more threatening offensively.

Getting double-digits results from multiple players allowed the Bulldogs to have an easy night in a 58-29 win over Tyrone. Along with producing a three game winning streak.

“The main thing is we’ve been getting more than one person scoring,” said head coach Ray Kennedy. “Earlier in the year we weren’t scoring many points. We’d had one player scoring 20 points and we wouldn’t have anybody else scoring at the same time. In the last few games we’ve had several players score in double figures.”

Such was the case Tuesday. Lucero Ugarte scored 22 points. Shayla Mathis had 11.

Ball game.

A 10 point second quarter run, reeled off in 61 seconds that was fueled by the two starters put the game away at halftime.

Up 17-6 with 5 minutes, 45 seconds, Ugarte and Mathis scored in each of Hooker’s next four possessions to extend their lead to 19 points midway into the period.

Changing defenses, Kennedy explained, was the spark that led to the scoring spree.

“We changed presses on them in the second quarter. And bang-bang presses are like that. You kind of get on a roll. That’s what happened there.”

Tyrone, who only had 14 total points in the first half, shaved a point off the Bulldogs  lead just before intermission.

It was the last time the Bobcats would get within 20 points of Hooker.

Ugarte stopped any ideas of a Tyrone rally by scoring 12 of the Bulldogs 19 points in the third quarter. Five of the senior’s field came in a 16-0 stretch where Hooker extended its lead to 46-14.

“She certainly lit it up in that quarter,” Kennedy said.

The 19-7 output in the period allowed the coach to give Ugarte and the rest of the Bulldogs starters the rest of the night off. Ahead 51-21 entering the fourth quarter, Hooker’s subs played most of the period.

Katy Lotspeich had 11 points to lead Tyrone. Adrienne Sanborn was the only other member of the Bobcats to have more than 8 points.

Both teams conclude the pre-holiday break portion of their respective schedules Friday. Hooker hosts Stratford, Texas. Tyrone wraps-up a two-game road trip at Goodwell.

In other games played Tuesday involving area teams, Texhoma’s Brittany Beatty scored 19 points in a 49-39 loss to Cordell at the Merritt Festival. Courtney Sheets chipped in 13.

The Red Devils slip to 3-5 on the year with the loss.

Texhoma’s boys moved to 7-1 by edging Cordell 63-62. J.D. Pugh led the team with 28 points. Matt Freeman and Cash Overton had 16 and 15 points, respectively.
