Dillard C. Smith, 81, died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009, at St. Francis Hospital Harry Hines Hospice in Wichita.

He was born April 27, 1928, to Boon M. and Joy M. Wesley Smith in Independence.

He married Mary Lee Owens Pierce Nov. 4, 1950, in Clayton, N.M. She died Feb. 9, 1999.

He was a sorter and rural mail carrier for 20 years. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by one grandson, Shannon Smith and wife, Charissa, Liberal; three stepgrandchildren, Larry Pierce, Vinita, Okla., Houston Pierce, Manhattan, and LeAnne Hatcher, Houston; and three great-grandchildren, Kielah, Kasandra and Slater Smith, Liberal.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jimmy Smith, one stepson Larry Pierce; one brother; and one sister.

o Graveside and burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Restlawn Memorial Gardens with Audie McCuistion presiding.

Military honors will be by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.
