ELKHART – Esther Friend, 100, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at Morton County Care Center in Elkhart.
She was born April 3, 1909, to Thomas and Angeline (Knox) King in Winfield.
She married George Friend April 11, 1930, in Dodge City. He preceded her in death.
She graduated from Winfield High School in 1928 and attended nursing school in Winfield. In 1967, she graduated from Oklahoma Panhandle State University and went on to earn her masters degree in education from West Texas State University.
She worked as a nurse in Elkhart. She taught school in Johnson. She was also a pastor at the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Hugoton and was a traveling evangelist.
She enjoyed gardening, canning and playing the piano.
Survivors include two sons, Charlie Friend and wife, Dru Ann, Rolla, and Don Friend and wife, Betty, Benson, Ariz.; two brothers, Robert King, Winfield, and Ralph King, Wichita; four sisters, Edith Wells, Phillipsburg, Inez Foster, Udall, Martha Spencer, Winfield, and Thelma Brown, Lamar, Mo.; three grandchildren, Janice Hollis, Clark Friend and Ryan Friend; four great-grandchildren, Houston Friend, Shome Day, Michiel Friend and Joe Don Friend; and three great-great-grandchildren, Zachary Day, Zander Day and Zayden Day.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Roy King and Raymond King; and one grandson, Carson Friend.
o Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rolla Cemetery, Rolla with Pastor Ben Coats presiding.
