VELDA M. SIPES
ELKHART – Velda M. Sipes, 96, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at Morton County Care Center.
She was born Jan. 24, 1913, to Alphious Bradbury and Sarah Elizabeth Rutherford Morse near Severy.
She married Don Martin Sipes Oct. 1, 1943, at the United Methodist Church at Wichita. He preceded her in death.
She graduated from Howard High School in 1930. After high school, she attended Wichita Business College, graduating as a tax practitioner and bookkeeper.
She worked for Allen E. Smoll in his insurance business. She and Don later farmed and ranched in northern Morton County. She also worked as a secretary for attorney Edgar White and a bookkeeper/accountant for Fishers Inc. and had a bookkeeping/income tax business of her own. She also worked at the Morton County Hospital filing insurance claims and ran the Tuscan Drive In Theater.
She was a member of the JOY Circle and United Methodist Women’s group at her cherch. She taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Elkhart.
She received the “I Love Elkhart Award.” She was a charter member of the Business Professional Women’s Club of Elkhart. She served as the treasurer of the Lion’s Club Community Band. She was a member of the Red Hat Society.
She enjoyed playing Skip-Bo, working with numbers, jigsaw puzzles and her stamp collection. She also enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include daughters, Janet and husband, Billy Burns, Eva, Okla., Ann and husband, Richard Hall, Dallas, and Donna and husband, Thomas Morris, Balko, Okla.; grandchildren, Jolinda Burns, Stillwater, Okla., Kimberly and husband, David Bruner, Yampa, Colo., Billy Don and wife, Crystal Burns, Logan, N.M., Kristi and husband, J.D. Burroughs, Haughton, La., Jennifer Morris, Oklahoma City, and David and wife, Kelly Morris, Norman, Okla.; grandchildren of Ann and Richard Hall; great-grandchildren, Dakota, Lourtney and Kayedence Bruner, Alexia and Natalie Burroughs, Kambry and Brock Burns and Tommy Morris; one aunt, Shirley Hagler, Hutchinson; one sisters-in-law, Eloida Morse, Neligh, Neb., and Norma Morse, Elk City, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews and friends.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, one son, Dean Martin Sipes; three brothers, Wayne, Clyde and Ivan Morse; and four sisters, Marjorie Horn, Gertrude Comstock, Dora Lampton and Imogene McFadden.
o Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Elkhart United Methodist Church with pastors Bruce Ferguson and Jim Cunningham presiding.
