The Liberal Bulldogs battled with Ulysses Wednesday night in a 10- inning contest. Chris Flowers stepped in in the top of the ninth and hit the RBI double to put the Bulldogs ahead and Liberal came out with a league win, 8-6.

Chris Flowers had the big hit and pitched the first six innings for the Bulldogs as well.

In a tied contest Liberal scored one in the fifth to go up 3-2.

Ulysses answered and tied it up. Liberal added another run in the seventh inning but Ulysses tied it up in the bottom half of the seventh to head into extra innings.

No runs were scored until the top of the tenth inning Chris “Turtle”

Flowers hit a two-RBI double to put Liberal ahead just having to hold on defense to tally the win.

Jared Hall came in the 10th and shutout Ulysses to tally the win and his first save of the season.

“It was a good feeling,” Hall said. “I haven’t got much time in, but now that I’m starting to it’s nice to come in in relief rather than start. I got the opportunity to hit the lead-off spot and started making some contact. Olmstead felt since we were short I could step up and fill in and I did and am glad I’ve been getting the opportunity.”

The Bulldogs now sit at 12-2 overall and 6-0 in league.

“I didn’t think we played with, much emotion and struggled,” Bulldogs head coach Eric Olmstead said. “We just couldn’t get runners on early and didn’t have a lot reach till late, we started swinging late.”

Liberals bats woke up late and steady pitching and defense put them over the top. The Bulldogs have struggle at the plate but usually find ways.

“Whenever we’re not hitting well we find a way to work around it with some small ball,” Hall said.

Liberal did make some runs Wednesday on squeezes and laid down bunts and worked runners into position to give themselves scoring opportunities en route to their 8-6 10-inning win.

The Bulldogs will be in Dodge City this weekend for the Dodge City 19- and-under tournament.
