The Southwestern Heights Lady Mustangs forced the Sublette Larks into 22 turnovers, and won 44-22 to advance to the finals of the Hi-Plains Tournament, and set up a ‘clash of the titans’ of sorts against undefeated Cimmaron.

“Our defense was aggressive and had pretty good positioning, and that’s the key,” Lady Mustangs coach Barry Mellen said. “To see what’s going and get to where you’re supposed to be.”

Heights forced 10 of the Larks turnovers in the first quarter as they took a 12-5 lead. The Lady Mustangs extended their lead in the second to 25-12. Heights was held to just 5 in the third, but their defense did not allow Sublette to rally.

“We didn’t shoot the ball as well as I’d like, and usually our inside game is stronger than it was last night,” Mellen said. “They do have a big shot blocker and we had to adjust our game to that.”

The Lady Mustangs pulled away with a 14-3 fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Sheree Ryan led the Mustangs offense with 11, and Rebi Jacobs added 10.

The win sets up a championship game Saturday at 6 p.m. at Garden City Community College between the 11-0 No.5 Lady Mustangs and No.4, 11-0 Cimmaron who rallied from a 13-point deficit to defeat Meade 61-55 Thursday night.

“It shows how good you are, how good of habits you have, and how well you handle adversity,” Barry Mellen said. “If we play our game and take good care of the ball, their game is to full-court press and cause turnovers. I like our chances. I know our defense will keep us in most games, but they hit about 90 percent of their free throws so we can’t put them on the line. It’s one of those games I’m looking forward too, and I hope our players are too.”
