After a frustrating start that saw the Hooker Lady Bulldogs fall behind because they could not hit layups, turned around in the second quarter and ended up a 43-35 win.
After Laverne took an 8-3 lead heading into the second quarter, the shots that would not go in for Hooker in the first quarter started to go in.
“We were getting a lot of good looks in the first quarter, everything was just in and out,” Lady Bulldogs coach Ray Kennedy said. “We just couldn't buy a bucket. We finally started scoring in the second quarter, and that was the difference in the game.”
Hooker quickly turned the game in their favor outscoring Laverne 22-10 to take a 25-18 lead at the half. Shania Miller scored 8 of her 10 points during the second quarter, and as a team the Lady Bulldogs hit three threes in the second quarter.
Hooker increased their lead by two with a 12-10 advantage in the third, and held on for the win in the fourth quarter.
Kyra Cathcart was the Lady Bulldogs leading scorer with 16, and Brittany Bergner added 6. “We always seem to have different scoring leaders each game that's a nice thing to have,” Kennedy said.
But this win in particular was not just about who scored, but what they did away form the scorebook.
“Dana Jiminez did a really nice job on the boards and defensively,” Kennedy said. “We took about five charges as a team as well. I was pretty happy with the way guys were willing to take one for the team.
Hooker is now 11-4 and will face Texhoma Tuesday.
