Alex Sanchez only scored nine points in the Hooker Bulldogs win over the Laverne Tigers. But of those nine, five were critical points in Hooker’s 46-44 win Friday night.
We started out slow. It was a tie ball game with 35 seconds left they had the ball. Alex Sanchez got a steal and laid it up for two. Stopped them on their last shot.
With around a minute left in the game, Laverne led by one point. Sanchez drilled a three to give the Bulldogs a two-point lead. Laverne tied the game at the free throw line and had possession of the ball again with 35 seconds left, when Sanchez stole the pass and scored on a layup with just nine seconds left.
The Bulldog defense held, and the rest is history.
“He made two really big plays for us,” Bulldogs coach Bud Valerius said.
Hooker had lost a 7-point halftime lead early in the fourth before the end of game heroics had happened. Hooker had taken a slim 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, and outscored Laverne 15-10 in the second to lead 27-20 at halftime.
“I thought we had great offense in the first half, even though we missed a lot of layups,” Valerius said. “But we got great looks and executed maybe better than we had all year in the half court. Still up seven at half. We had some turnover issues that helped them get back in it to lead. Most proud of how our guys that when we got down we didn't lose our composure. We kept grinding and getting good looks, stuck with the game plan and ended up winning.”
Payson Slater was the Bulldogs top scorer with 16, and Joe Bean finished with 10.
Hooker is now 13-2, and will take on county rival Texhoma on the road Tuesday.
