The Southwestern Heights Ledy Mustangs started their game against Larned the way all teams would love to start. A 16-0 burst to start the game was the catalyst toward a 45-28 win over Larned.
Sheree Ryan scored 8 fo her game-high 22 in the first quarter, and Whitney Gorington and Jackie Loya combined to hit three treys to help Heights build a 21-5 first quarter lead.
"Our press really worked well to start the game," Lady Mustangs coach Barry Mellen said. "We had some who got steals and others who scored in transition, nad also hit shots from the perimeter well in that first quarter. Now in the second quarter, we forgot how to play for a little while."
The Heights offense slowed down to a crawl in the second quarter, scoring only four points. Their defense was still stout, holding Larned to just six.
In the third quarter, the Lady Mustangs pounded the ball inside to Ryan, who scored 8 more, and led 35-22 heading into the fourth. Heights added four to the lead in the fourth to win by 17.
Next up for the Lady Mustangs, Tuesday night will be Meade at home.
"It's a rivalry game," Mellen said. "You can throw out the records."
