After receiving their frist ranking of the season, the Seward County Saints dropped their first game of the season, and it wasn’t close.
Seward lost to host Odessa at the Thanksgiving Classic, 74-55.
After sporting a prolific offense that was averaging more than 80 points per game, the Saints struggled to find a way to score against the Odessa defense.
Most of the disparity came on the glass. Odessa grabbed 44 rebounds while the Saints only had 28.
Odessa leaned on Derrick Barden who lit up the Saints for 25 points and 16 rebounds. The double double was Barden’s ninth of the season.
The Wranglers also took advantage of free throw opportunities, outscoring Seward 16-5 at the stripe.
Seward’s big scorers, on the other hand, struggled to make a shot. Daveon Boardingham had averaged double figures this season but only scored four points.
Still, Seward had three scorers reach double figures. Deverell Biggs scored 13, Irvin Hollinger had 12, Kaheem Ransom scored 11, and Brice Jenkins hit two threes and ended the game with 10.
Seward (6-1) faced New Mexico Junior College Saturday.
