Judging by the results of the Angry Red freshmen, the future of Liberal Redskin football looks bright.
Liberal dominated Great Bend Friday at Redskin Field in a 44-0 rout of the Panthers.
The win was the third consecutive blowout victory over a Western Athletic Conference opponent.
Liberal ran over Dodge City two weeks ago, 55-20, and last week the Redskin freshmen traveled to Garden City and trampled the Buffaloes 46-8.
Monday’s blowout victory over Great Bend was another indicator that better days are ahead for the Redskin football program.
Tommy Cole scored two Rushing touchdowns and threw for another with a touchdown pass to Mersheke Wiltshire.
The Redskins offensive and defensive lines also dominated the visitors from Great Bend.
The upfront blocking allowed running backs Brighton Wyndom and Rex Heronemus to have their way with the Panther defense.
Heronemus scored one rushing touchdown and then had a 90-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the third quarter.
Wyndom tuned in the highlight play of the game early in the fourth quarter when he took a hand-off at the Redskin 27 yard line and muscled his way through the Panther defensive line. He then headed to the Redskin sideline where he met three more Panthers. After juking the first, he stiff armed the second and ran by the third before meeting a host of Panthers in a scrum at the Panther 35 yard line. Wyndom yanked his leg out of one would-be tackler, stiff-armed another, broke out of the pack and headed to the end zone.
The win pushed the freshmen to a perfect 3-0 record in WAC competition and 4-1 overall.
