Leader & Times staff report

Cimarron River’s two teams representing the 13 and 14-year-old teams headed to Garden City for the state tournament Friday and both came away with wins.

The 13-year-old team, who won state as 12-year olds and advanced to the Midwest Regional title game a year ago, started the state tournament with a 10-0 win over Independence.

Garden City’s host team also won 12-3 over Tri Valley. Wellington defeated Ottawa 5-2, and Fort Scott rolled over Mid-Kansas 11-0.

Fort Scott and Cimarron River played late Saturday afternoon with the winner advancing to the top three.

For the 14-year-olds, the game was much closer. The Rattlers edged Parsons 8-7. Earlier in the day, Wellington edged out Mid-Kansas 10-9, and Ottawa defeated Osawatomie 14-7.

Host Garden City was trailing Coffeyville 10-0 in the second inning before a late Friday night rain caused a delay until Saturday.

The Rattlers played Wellington late Saturday.

The state championships in both tournaments in Garden City will be played Monday.
