Just before midnight Friday, the Seward County Fire Department responded to a report of a house explosion in the 17000 block of Seward County Road V in the northeast part of the county. Two occupants of the home were transported to Southwest Medical Center, where one later died of his injuries.
According to a press release from Seward County Fire Chief Michael Rice, the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office was called in to investigate the incident.
“Seward County Fire Department responded to a reported house explosion in the 17000 block of Road V,” Rice’s release noted. “Upon arrival, we found a total collapse, with the exception of the garage area. There were two patients transported to SWMC by Seward County EMS where one patient later died.”
A family member has since confirmed the man who died was Maynard Greeson of Kismet, and it was his wife who survived. She has been released from the hospital, and though battered and bruised, she is in good condition.
“The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted at 11:47 p.m. and arrived on Saturday morning at 1:54,” the release continued. “The home had both natural gas and propane. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation by local authorities and the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office.”
Rice added the Seward County Fire Department responded with two command units, seven fire units and 15 firefighters were on the scene. Mutual Aid was also received from the Liberal Fire Department with one rescue unit and two firefighters, the Seward County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol.
