Air Force First Lieutenant Tim Brunson, left, presents a flag to DeWayne Watson, commander of the Liberal VFW post, Friday. Brunson was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Task Force Peacekeeper as part of the medical staff. Brunson is a nurse in the Air Force assigned to take care of detainees captured in the field and brought to a facility in Afghanistan. “While I was over there, the support from the VFW was very obvious to us,” he said. “We had free morale calls courtesy of the VFW, plus I’ve got a connection here at the VFW to my hometown. I thought, at a minimum, this is something that I can do. They can display it here.” The flag presented to Watson was flown over the camp where the detainee facility was located, and Brunson also presented a certificate with the flag signed by the senior enlisted person and his general. “The certificate is specifically assigned to this VFW post,” Brunson said. Brunson grew up in Syracuse, Kan., but now calls Liberal home. “I came here to go to school. I met my wife here, so I kind of call this my hometown,” he said. L&T photo/Robert Pierce
