For nearly three-amd-a-half hours Friday night, a Liberal man was is an armed standoff with Liberal police officers and the Special Response Team. The man had beaten his 36-year-old girlfriend and threatened to kill her and himself, according to a report from Capt.

Pat McClurg.

At 11:18 p.m. Friday, officers of the Liberal Police Department responded to 1540 Clay Court after a 36-year-old female reported her 43-year-old boyfriend battered her and threatened to kill her and himself, the report noted.

“The woman reported the male was armed with several guns. She had minor injuries and refused medical treatment,” the release added.

Arriving officers contacted the male at the residence; however, he barricaded himself inside and refused to communicate with them.

Liberal Police Department negotiators and SRT officers were summoned to assist. Though numerous attempts to contact the male were made, he never communicated with police.

The SRT officers eventually entered the home at 2:40 Saturday morning and discovered the man hiding in the residence and took him into custody. Several guns were also located. The man was uninjured and refused medical treatment, the report noted.

The man, who was unidentified and will not be until he has his first appearance in court, was arrested for aggravated battery, aggravated assault, criminal restraint, criminal threat and disorderly conduct.

An affidavit will be forwarded to the Seward County Attorney for filing of formal charges, according to McClurg.
