After winning nine of their last 11 games by using their thunderous bats, the Seward County Saints turned to their pitching Sunday afternoon at Brent Gould Field as they defeated the Hutchinson Blue Dragons 3-2 in Game 3 of the series before completing the sweep in style with a 10-0 win in Game 4 to bring out the brooms on their Jayhawk West rival.
Game 3 of the series would be a struggle as the teams remained tied 2-2 from the third to the seventh inning.
In the seventh the Saints loaded the bases with nobody out, and JT Bean hit a chopper on the infield to bring home the winning run to give Seward a 3-2 walk off win.
In the series finale it was all Seward.
The Saints took a 5-0 lead after three innings and that would be all the Seward pitching staff needed.
Keegan Hucul and Jose Gonzalez neutralized the Hutch hitters to the tune of just four hits in Seward’s first shutout of the season as they again won in walk off style, this time with less drama, when Bean singled home Jordan Dallalio to force the run rule at 10-0 in the eighth.
The Saints took a strangle hold on the conference standings where they will likely control their own destiny next weekend when they travel to last place Pratt Friday and Saturday.
