For a half, the Lady Redskins played like the best team in Kansas.
But a fourth quarter meltdown proved to be too much, and Liberal dropped its first game of the season to No. 8 Omaha-Marion, Neb., 59-35.
In the first half, the Lady Redskins avoided the 6-foot, 6-inch center by shooting perimeter shots.
On the defensive end, Liberal went toe-to-toe on the boards.
The result was a 29-18 lead midway through the secodn quarter.
But Marian battled back and had a chance to tie or take the lead into halftime, but a shot clanked off the rim at the buzzer, and the Lady Redskins headed to the break with a 29-27 lead.
Another strong defensive effort contained Marian in the third, but the Lady Redskins struggled to shoot, and Marian took a 38-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
And that’s when it got ugly for the Lady Redskins.
Marian found a way to dismantle the Lady Redskin defense, and Liberal experienced its worsting shooting quarter fo the season.
The result was a 59-35 final.
Liberal coach Shane Stout knew his team would be tested heading in to the tournament.
Liberal dropped to 10-1 with the loss while Marian improved to 12-2.
Omaha-Marian advanced to the championship game against Andover Central who knocked off Rose Hill, 36-35 in the semi-final.
Liberal battled Rose Hill late Saturday for third place.
