LIBERAL — For the first half of Tuesday’s season-opening soccer contest between Liberal and Guymon, Okla., a strong southwest wind swirled around Redskin Field. Neither team could manage much in the way of offense.
Then the winds of change favored Liberal. The breeze suddenly shifted to due north — right at Liberal’s back — and the Lady Redskins finally punched through Guymon’s bend-but-don’t-break defense for a 2-0 victory.
Liberal head coach Luis Aguilar wasn’t overly pleased with his teams early performance.
“We’re just not putting the puzzle together early,” Aguilar said. “Guymon really wasn’t bringing much to the table. We were kind of backed up, just couldn’t put them away earlier.”
Why is that?
“Some of that has to do with lack of intensity,” Aguilar said. “Some of our girls were almost dragging their feet.”
The Lady Tigers (0-1-1) out-shot Liberal 7-4 in the first half, but after the wind shift, Guymon played on its heels, defending attack after attack after attack by the Lady Redskins (1-0). Liberal out-shot Guymon 16-2 in the second half, but didn’t break through until Karina Vazquez took a feed from Cynthia Amaya and put the ball just above leaping Guymon goal keeper Brenna Hutchins at the 5:22 mark of the second half.
That took the wind out of Guymon’s sails, and the Lady Tigers seemed to give up as Vazquez put the exclamation point on the win with a goal at 2:20.
Vazquez is a defensive mid-fielder, a position that doesn’t often score goals.
“Her main thing is to help out the defense and control the middle,” Aguilar said. “But at the end she started telling the forwards they neeed to put something away. She set an example for our scorers up front.”
Aguilar was also pleased with Katie Burnett’s performance defensively.
“She kept us in the game,” Aguilar said.
Guymon head coach Michelle Davis was pleased with her team’s first half performance against a Lady Red team the Lady Tigers just can’t seem to beat.
“Our first half we just dominated,” Davis said. “We were controlled, we had our personnel in the right spot. Then the wind shifted. As soon as we touched the ball, the wind just comes into our face.”
Liberal next travels to Wichita for the Titan Classic, which the Lady Red will open Monday against Wichita South.
Guymon travels to Chickasha, Okla. on Thursday for a tournament. The Lady Tigers play two on Thursday against Elgin and Chickasha.
